Bike the Cape
Under Your Own Steam
HI-New England operates five seasonal hostels on the Cape, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. From a historic life-saving station to a recently renovated Sears Roebuck Kit House on Hyannis Harbor, the hostels provide travelers with eco friendly lodging options, and more importantly a way to interact with guests from across the globe. American Youth Hostelling has its roots in cycling and travelling Under Your Own Steam. It is with this in mind that HI-New England launches the Bike the Cape contest.
The Winners AKA: Team Hostel Bikers
Andrew Doyle and Justin Lopez, two University of Florida students first heard of the contest when visiting HI-Boston this winter.
Justin Lopez is a recent graduate of the University of Florida, where he received a degree in Industrial and Systems engineering. Justin's hobbies include biking (of course), tennis, playing guitar, reading, and enjoying a good craft beer.
Andrew Doyle is currently enrolled at the University of Florida and is double majoring in Industrial and Systems Engineering and Mathematics. Andrew participates in triathlons and 5K runs. Reading books, enjoying nature, and philanthropy consume this student's waking hours. Justin and Andrew are excited for the contest because, "Not only do bikes cut down traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, biking is fun and a healthy activity. Taking a bike trip lets you slow down and take in your surroundings that a car isolates you from. Also, you save a lot of money. You can't lose!
It may be said modern day vacations involve erratic flight from home to a destination, or sequence of destinations, leaving the calm that show be enjoyed during leisure defenseless under the inauspicious tyranny of time tables and checked baggage. The freedom allowed by the bicycle will allow us to take in the culture and natural beauty of the Cape best, while remaining highly mobile."
